tour de france: end of the alps

July 22nd, 2009

great day in france today. thor hushovd made a ridiculous solo move to secure the green jersey in paris. jurgen vandenbroek had another gutsy day at the front of the race. the schleck brothers beat on astana but couldn’t make a dent in alberto contador. frank schleck giving it all to try to get his brother andy a podium position in paris and being rewarded with a stage win. lance armstrong playing the team game and single-handedly dragging bradley wiggins out of contention before the time trial tomorrow. once wiggins was wiped out, lance descending like a lunatic, bridged up to kloden, if nothing else to show that he was holding back to take care of wiggins, not because he didn’t have the legs.

lots of action, lots of tactics, strategy in play for all four jerseys. alberto contador has much to learn from someone like lance armstrong about how to allow your teammates to help you. no one is going to want to ride for you if you continually drop them with no notice after they’ve ridden tempo for you for a hundred miles. dumb.

how crazy would it be for a kazak team to fill the top three spots of the podium? weird.

dang!

Both times I’ve blogged from my phone I’ve been at the courthouse. First time was miles’ adoption day. This time I have jury duty. So far no action.

Falls Creek Falls - finally

i’ve wanted to visit this waterfall since i first saw a photo. as it turns out the trailhead is less than an hour drive from my house up highway 14 just past carson. a few times i’ve bagged work for the morning and gone over to the lesser known falls around multnomah to shoot for a while. but i hadn’t yet made the drive to track down this lovely. about a month ago i found out that my mom was coming for a visit so i decided to save this one for when she’d be here.

i had directions to the trailhead and knew which trail i wanted to take. we followed the directions to the trailhead and had a few moments of confusion but avoided taking any wrong turns. then we started hiking and the fun began. there were two trails: 152 and 152A. from what i had read, 152 leads to the upper falls which is what i thought i wanted.

as it turns out, 152A basically follows the creek from the trailhead to the waterfall. trail 152 one would be tempted to call the long and scenic route, but since both routes were scenic, it was just the really really long route. it was an amazing hike, but i would have enjoyed it more if i hadn’t been busy thinking about whether or not we were going the right way and how long would it take us to get back and would we ever get to the freaking waterfall.

the hike was supposed to be an easy 1.5 miles. not the way we played it. i wish i had had my garmin with me so that i knew exactly how far we walked. it was no less than 5 miles, probably closer to six. luckily we were able to take the shorter trail back in the interest of time.

for me, the waterfall was worth every step. it has three tiers, the second two are visible in the picture above. the first two are visible from the trail as you approach the falls. at the end of the trail only the second and third tiers are visible. the second tier looks like a fountain that feeds the long drop of the third tier into the pool at the bottom. absolutely my favorite waterfall so far.

email exchange

July 29th, 2008

here is a very rough paraphrase of an email conversation i just had with erica’s mom regarding miles’ adoption (she provided the punchline):

adoption lawyer: some dollars
adoption party: some dollars
grandma sue’s celebratory 70’s dance moves: priceless

every blog should have a good some dollars, some dollars, priceless joke at least once a year. i was definitely overdue.
